Carbon Copy Paper, also known as carbonic paper, has a special coating on one side which is made from a layer of loosely bound dry ink adhered with wax. In this manner, multiple copies can be made when creating a single document by the pressure from writing master document imprinting the copies with carbon.
Today, carbonless copy paper (or NCR paper) is more widely used, replacing the old carbon sheets which were dirty and cumbersome. With a layer of micro-encapsulated dye on the back of the first sheet and a reactive clay on the top of the second, carbonless copy paper transfers ink when the micro-capsules break from the pressure of the writing utensil and react with the clay on the second sheet. Carbonless copy paper is safer for the environment and much healthier, which is why the old, original carbon copy paper is found less frequently today.
